April 14 to 17, 2014'slow times'

This week so far has been very slow on the bus journeys. On Monday, I awoke later than usual after a busy day on Sunday and several misadventures. I was just not on the mood to rush for the early bus at 6.30 and hence I ended up getting the 7.30 Bridgetown from Bayfield. Of course at this time of the morning, it was fully into the morning rush hour traffic and hence we met the full back to back gridlock at the Two-mile, Haggath Hall and Government Hill sections of Highway 5. Needless to say I got to Bridgetown about 9.00 am, the first time I have arrived so late since starting the bus chronicles.

On Tuesday the 16th, I didn't take the bus as I drove that day.

Today, Wednesday, I got out the door a little late and hence missed the 6.30 SLC by about 5 minutes. While waiting at the stop I saw the mother of baby Jamilla who arrived late also and we had the similar comment that some days, you're just not in the mood to be rushing, especially as a long weekend approches. No buses were seen passing, so we took the first available vehicle coming along, which happened to be a Bayfield minibus. All the seats were just taken as we entered, so we had to stand for the journey. Surprisingly although the driver was playing music, it was not the crude and boisterous dub music or promotional CDs for some upcoming fete as is the norm. The music was moderately loud and tolerable and although not my type was tasteful. We stood in the bus until the bottom of Government Hill by the Nita Barrow Roundabout where I eventually got a seat. Even though there was moderate traffic, I was still able to get to town by 7.45, which was still much faster than taking the 6.30 SLC.

Thankfully every day this week we all had a safe trip and we're grateful for the travelling mercies of the day, especially after hearing the news that as much as 300 travellers may have lost their lives in a ferry accident in Korea.

¡Gracias a Dios!

April 10 2014 'a bus shelter appears!'

We were greeted at the stop today with a new bus shelter which magically appeared. Yesterday I wrote about seeing the signs of pending construction of the shelter, but today as I approached the shop, 'Voila!', the shelter was there.  I met AC at the stop this morning and we discussed the new and very welcomed development.

During the daytime the stop is exposed to the blistering sun for the entire day,  the nearby tamarind tree provides limited shelter, but the shelter will be most welcomed when it rains. I have had several experiences of having to struggle to find cover in the rain. On occasions, I have had to suffer insults from friends to get shelter (Comp) or the kindheartedness of acquaintances (AC) to be protected, or even travel with my broken umbrella. This should all now come to an end. Thank You, Adopt-A-Stop!!

On the trip today, R2 and R2L were together again and I took  the seat in front of them. Nothing eventful occurred today, just a quiet, peaceful trip.

I'm only waiting for some money to magically appear and then my day would be made!!

April 9 2014' Evening Bayfield bus, 30 years and shorter'

While standing in the line waiting for the bus, a young lady standing behind me asked if I was Nigiel. She remembered me from going to vacation bible school more than 35 years ago at Advent Avenue. I initially thought that she was an adventist and a member of Advent but she later related that she was not an Adventist but just a young child from the community who went to VBS with me at the same church. I'm sure that I had seen her some time in the line before, and the face was vaguely familiar, but with my poor long term memory, I could never be sure.

What surprised me the most was that after all these years she still remembered my name. She guessed it as Nigiel Barrow but I corrected her on the surname. When I asked how she was able to recollect me after all those years, she said that I had not changed in the 30 years, but had only gotten a little shorter! When she explained where she lived, at the top of the 4th Avenue Alleyne's Land, I had a vague recollection of some people from the area, but had guessed the wrong house.

It's just amazing the impact you can make on people's lives and the lasting memories that are made by simple interactions daily.

Today, while paying a bill at Courts, I happened to see a member of the SLC bus posse, who remembered me. It was the mother of little Jamilla, Comp's baby friend. I asked how J was, and she said she was fine now and had fully recovered from her bout of gastro. When asked if she was back out to the nursery she said not yet, as she was home with her father this week. Regarding going back to the nursery where she got sick, she was adamant that the baby was not returning to that place.

There's a saying that we have one chance to make a first impression. Do you ever consider what impression you make on others and conversely what impression do you form of others you meet?

It felt good, to be remembered after all those years by name. It reminded me of the Book of Remembrance God has, I hope that mine in filled with the collection of good and kind deeds done. What about you?

April 9 2014 'bus driver gets reported'

Today was a most unusual day on the bus.

Firstly, as I reached the stop I noticed that preparations were being made for what appeared to be a bus shelter to be erected. This was an idea that Comp and I had a few weeks before and was actively exploring with MTW. It seems that someone else had similar plans and had beaten us to the finish line. We will still however continue with our queries.

Secondly, the SLC came down earlier than usual about 6.25 and was the first bus to arrive, normally it is preceded by the Bayfield and the Silver Sands buses. As I boarded the almost empty bus, the only persons I recognized were R2 and the intruder. The intruder was sitting in the second row on the right next to R2's regular seat and R2 had shifted over to the other side. Since R2 was now on the left alone, I sat in the seat beside her in the empty place usually taken by R2L.

Thirdly, I noted to R2 that the others had deserted me and that I was travelling alone today, we exchanged a few comments then I observed that something was different. The driver was driving very recklessly, so that everyone was sliding all over  at every curve and corner he took. R2 was constantly sliding down and always adjusting her position. I was complaining about this to her and even made the comment that what the Minister said about putting seat belts on the buses made sense, if this was the way the drivers were going to be driving. It became so overbearing, that I decided to write a formal complaint and started to compose an email to send to the customer service dept.

Fourthly, the almost unthinkable occurred. As I was about to take a photo of my receipt to include in my email, I heard the sound of police sirens. There were three buses in line and I naturally assumed that  the officer wanted to pass the buses as he was on some urgent business. The buses did not pull over however and when we reached the stop outside the airport, the driver pulled into the bay and got out of the bus. I can't be sure what was the reason for being stopped, but given the way he was driving previously, I'm sure it was connected to that. I finished my email to the customer service about the poor driving and sent that off the the authorities registering my disgust.

Fifthly, at Oistins, who appeared in the bus but R2L. She came and stood in the aisle beside R2 and I and asked me to hold her bags. She asked if the driver got reported and explained that when she got to the stop, she heard that the bus had already left. She was surprised, since it was still early so she took the Silver Sands instead and came to Oistins. It also seemed that since the bus was pulled over, she was able to pass it on the way and reach to Oistins before we did.

Sixthly, whilst standing, R2L noticed an empty seat and went to sit in the back of the bus. However, instead of taking her bags, she told me to hold the bags for her whilst she went and sat in the back. I was shocked at that! A woman normally does not leave her bags unattended, unless she has no choice, but for her to leave her bags to go to sit, was unexpected. It seemed she had some confidence that her possessions were safe.

She later retrieved her bags as she left and R2 said farewell on departing. I took the remainder of the trip to compose this narrative.

A very interesting morning, one of several firsts. I wait now to see if I will get a response to my complaint.

To all of you have a  safe day!!

Bendiciones!

April 8 2014 'the only constant is change'

Today, is the first day of the new season of chronicles without the faithful Comp in the first row. It was indeed  a day of transitions as it is also the first week of the school vacation, so that the road is much clearer, the trip much faster and many of the regulars being absent.

Yesterday, at the stop we met AC, the other faithful who takes the SLC. When she arrived I asked Comp to give me her fare to make change and she demanded that I ask more politely and also say 'please'. We both reminded her that according to her custom, taking the fare without asking was the norm and she was only getting a taste of her own medicine. AC remarked that since she had given me her fare last Friday, she had paid in advance and so had no problem.

Of interest both yesterday and today was the revised seating arrangements. R2R  and R2L are now sitting on the same side of the bus on the left, side by side, but still no interactions between them. Yesterday Comp and I sat in front of them, today it was the same but of course Comp was absent so I sat in front of R2L, Comp's seat being taken by an unknown traveller.

Of special interest was the fact that the bus driver yesterday, was the assumed father of BDD, the father of the bus driver's daughter. This was the first time for the year that he had been seen on the route, Comp had spotted him immediately as he passed up in the bus to turn and make the trip to town. It took me much longer to bring the face back to memory but the recollection eventually returned. To confirm that he was indeed whom we assumed, as he passed the area where BDD normally boards the bus, he tooted  the horn of the bus as if to salute someone in a house nearby. Comp believes she was able to identify the house he was signaling, such superpowers I however, have not been able to master.

Since I was delegated with the responsibility of custodian of the'black bag', it was my responsibility to distribute the booty. Yesterday, I handed a mint and mini chocolate to R2L  with a comment that I was trying to empty the bag, which elicited the inquiry 'why' and gave the opportunity to explain that Comp would be missing for a little while. Me and Comp both had our provision and the bag returned to safekeeping for another day. Today, the mint bag remained safely in its storeroom, I did not have the heart to bring it out.

At the stop  this morning, I was discussing with AC, the apparent changes coming to the transportation system. From this morning I noticed for the first time, the new Well House to Warrens cross country bus. This came down at 6.15 and has apparently replaced the Bridgetown bus. This was bitterly critised  by a commuter  at the stop, who said it was an ill timed and bad decision, the action was also critised by AC. Then we discussed the changes in the terminal with the erection of monitors at each of the departure gates. It was mooted, that these electronic monitors would probably give  departure information on the various routes and might replace the announcements made on the public address system.

The trip today, without Comp was quiet and dreary  with me taking the time to write this chronicles whilst on the way. This change will signal an evolution in the future of the chronicles. To me it is either evolution or extinction, for it will not be the same. The process of time will tell which, but as the popular cliche goes, 'the only thing constant  in life is change'.

April 3 2014 'Jamilla sick and Jamirah well'

After a slow day yesterday and with no significant activity, today began with baby Jamilla arriving at the stop with a morose look on her face and a  bandage on her little arm. Immediately, everyone was concern about her welfare and the absence of the smile and playful eyes. It was discovered that over the last few days, her mother had taken her to the nursery  and apparently she picked up a bug and and developed gastro. As her mother related, she came down with severe vomiting and diarrhea and had to be rushed to the hospital to be treated. This episode really traumatised the mother who was still visibly concerned about her well-being and she confided to us that, she had decided to remove her away from that nursery.  Both Comp and I tried to inform her that getting sick was nothing new for new children entering a new environment and that part of the adjustment is manifested in contracting the illnesses of the other children. She however was resolute in her decision and was firm that she would be making the change.  Despite the sullen mood of Jamilla, Comp was still able to tease a smile from her face for a brief moment.

As we entered the bus, Comp and AC paid their fare and Jamilla and mother, I entered last. By the time I got to the box the machine was jammed and the driver had to open it and adjust the paper roll. Row2 was in row 1 and the left row was free. The bus was one with the softer cushioned seats and the configuration was slightly different from the regular ones. In this case, there was only one row on the passenger's side before the side door. This row we claimed for the trip. A few of the regulars got on along the way, but the bus was filling rapidly. A young man with a nursery school aged daughter got on board and I stood to give them my seat.  Out of concern I warned the father that Comp was known for eating little girls, remembering the story of 'Jack and the beanstalk and the big ogre'. The father taken aback repeated 'eating little girls?' and the child turned her head away from Comp. Comp made a hurried attempt to explain and reassure the young man that his child was safe.

At the Hedding's corner SJ got on board and  without asking, immediately placed her bag in Comp's lap, and gave me a welcomed pinch on the elbow. I noticed that there was a new bag and commented that the bag probably came from the closet of bags and shoes that all women seem to have.

Today the crowd was unusually heavy and the bus was crammed to capacity, SJ remarked that the driver was acting like a ZR driver as he stopped at every stop, and refused to turn back any passengers from boarding. By the time we got to the airport, there were three persons standing in the doorway by the door and the aisle was filled three abreast almost along its entire length, SJ hoped that by the time the bus got to Oistins it would lighten.

Jamirah and her sisters were back out today, but because of the crowd they could not get near to Comp, and I could see her sense of disappointment at this. Instead she tried her best to amuse the little girl sitting on her father's lap beside her, but the girl was avoiding her and was trying her best to escape, for fear of being eaten.

Since we were standing, there was little conversation initially. After the bus lightened along the Maxwell stretch, a discussion started with SJ about  the Candy Crush game and the billions that the makers were making. We talked about how addictive it was and how the internet based companies are targeting users for advertising and making millions out of the many users who use their services. I noted that I had played the game for the first time after seeing a schoolgirl playing it on her tablet and was appalled to learn that there was a offer after losing, to pay a fee to complete the game by offering additional chances. To me this would lure unsuspecting gamers and the young to spend money if not vigilant.

Little by little the bus cleared until Comp got out and SJ took her seat. AC next reached her stop and left and then SJ got out at the Towers in Bay Street.

I stood for almost the entire length of the journey today, but it was a good trip and all arrived  safely at their destinations.

Bendiciones!!

April 1 2014 ’the mint crew helps out'

Comp redeemed herself today and played the part of the good samaritan by coming to my rescue and paying my bus fare. At the stop, we met AC and Ms Shrewsbury who were already there. As the bus came around the corner and I checked for the fare, I realized that I must have forgotten it on the dresser. The good Samaritan came to my rescue and offered to pay the fare. Not having exact change for two, she however defaulted to instinctive behavior and stuck out her hands to take the fares from AC and Ms Shrewsbury, with the comment, " even though he called me a busfare bully, I still had to come to his rescue today". AC and MS handed over the fares and entered the bus. At the box, MS whispered something to the driver and passed on, so did AC and then Comp paid the fare for all. I overheard some talk of mummy, so as I got to the box I said "She paid for me too!", and then to Comp, "Thank you mummy!".

We later understood, that MS had told the driver that 'Mummy was paying the fares for all' and when Comp put in the money, he confessed to her what was said, and  that was when I heard the word mummy whispered. The driver and all smiled at the incident and I collected the four tickets.

Row2 was now Row2.1 as the Intruder was indeed in the second row. AC and MS when down to the back as customary  so we took  the first row on the left, in front of R2L. After the regular greetings, we  started our usual conversations. Comp met a domino playing friend and was engaged in a discussion about the tournament.  At the Heddings corner, slim Jeans (SJ) got on board.  The storekeeper remembered the mint bag early this time and went into the bag for the bounty. Since we were out of mints however, the mini chocolates  had to be distributed today. Comp passed one to R2L with a comment about being fattening and then one to SJ. Before she could get back into the bag to get another SJ had hers opened and almost consumed. I got one after, Comp taking her cool time to hand over mine.  I believe that the bag may probably be empty by now, but seeing how it is under such tight security, one can never be sure.

At St. Martins Church, the dust on the road under repair was unusually high and the windows had to be closed.  At Gemwick, another crowd boarded the bus including a young man with a large haversack on his back who stood beside me. The bag was really large and as he was standing backing me the bag was inches away from my head. R2L remarked that he should take the bag off his back, as so I beckoned to him and offered to hold it. He was extremely grateful to be relieved of the burden.

On the Pilgrim Road stretch  the St. Lawrence sisters were out to school again. The three sisters including little Jamirah got on board and Comp was most excited to see her. She was hoping feverishly that the little girl would come and sit with her, but she got one of the side seats and so escaped another lesson in colours and shapes.  Comp was however miserable for the remainder of the trip and was twisting and turning to peek through the crowd to capture the attention of the little girl on the other side of the aisle and get a wave. It was a pity to witness her torment.

A little further at the Providence stop and elderly man got on board and SJ stood to give him her seat. Comp took SJ's bags, so we were now holding other people's bags. At Oistins a blind man and an elderly man  with a cane got on. The blind man got a seat after the bus driver insisted that a school boy got up and I stood to offer the elderly man mine.  All the bags at this time were passed to Comp who was left sitting, but there were too many bags to hold, so she shifted her bags back to R2L,  while she kept the large haversack, SJ's and my bags. I must admit, I felt for her, she had 4 massive bags and looked extremely comical as she could barely see over the top of the pile. SJ and me started to make fun saying that all she needed now was a red cap, with SJ adding "and a trolley". Given her gallant deeds, we both decided that she she should be given a tip for her deeds, But since I had forgotten my money at home and she was holding everybody's bags, an IOU would have had to suffice.

An interesting occurrence in Oistins reminded me of how, bonding and friendships are being formed on the bus. At the terminal, Comp saw BDD out the window and called to her. R2L then seeing her, said "she was out early today" and tried to call out to her. Comp gave her BDD's name and R2L stuck her head out the window and called until she got BDD's attention.  I was really impressed that she went out of her way to greet an acquaintance met on the bus and in our mint ritual.

This was a day however of connections. Whilst talking to SJ as we were standing and laughing at the 'red cap', I discovered that SJ was a student of my wife at the institute she goes to and was in my wife's class.  Later, after Comp left, she saw two of the St. Lawrence students we met on the bus, walking out of her workplace and discovered that their mother works in her building.  These obscure connections show us that we never know, who we will meet and how lives cross and are interconnected. It is therefore incumbent on us to be honest and upright in our actions and words to all.

The young man soon took his bag and Comp was able to see ahead again, then she reached her stop and SJ took her seat and I found a seat also, leaving everyone with their own load. I gave Comp the laurel however for being exceptionally helpful today. She went beyond the call of duty and we were all proud of her.

Indeed the entire mint crew did their part, R2L, SJ, Comp and I. The influence of the black plastic bag remains strong and the effect of the super mints.

Tenga un buen dia, Dios te bendiga!

March 31 2014 'Comp tries for record'

Today is the last day of March and for almost 3 months we have been recording the activities of the daily commute to Bridgetown on the SLC. Like most days in recent times, it was a slow day as is the case with Mondays. At the stop were a few known faces but none of the better known regulars like AC, Ms. Shewsbury, baby Jamilla etc..

There is normally a distinct pattern to the order of arrival of the buses on mornings. First would come the Bridgetown coming from Bayfield, then the Silver Sands, sometimes the Bridgetown coming from Well House and then the Bridgetown from Sam Lords Castle (SLC). Today only the Bayfield came followed by the SLC, our regular ride.

On the bus, there was a new driver, and among the passengers were Row2 in her usual spot and R2L who was out today. Also  observed was the Intruder and an old church friend who I see on the rare occasion. We sat in row 1 ahead of Row2. I waved at R2L who was looking a little preoccupied today and then, rousing Row2 from her kindle, said good morning and asked how was the weekend. Knowing I would get a one word reply, I also asked if she had followed  the results of the interschool sports and if she knew who had won. Of  course she had no idea, so I proceeded to tell of Springer's upset once more taking victory for girls and QC's victory in the boys division. Comp overhearing, naturally had to vet my facts for accuracy, asked who I said had won and corrected my misstatement about QC winning, it was in fact, St. Michael's. I had to communicate my correction to R2L, under  Comp's watchful gaze.

On the way some of the other regulars took their places, the Kolij twins, the security guard, julianna lookalike and Perfume. BDD was not out today as I had hoped, since I wanted to get her impression and opinion on the just ended sports meet.

Near the Trimart supermarket corner in St. Martins, an elderly lady boarded clearly unable to stand for the duration of the long journey, so I offered her my seat. Comp had her two bags holding and upon standing she offered to hold mine. (I was always curious to find out why and what could be the contents of these two massive bags. Immediately visions comes to mind of countless plastic bags, tied in knots with balls of newspaper inside and vials of liquids to smell. Whatever the contents, the bags are stuffed to their extremity and unusually heavy). She was now under the burden of the three bags and then seeing Perfume standing with her big orange cloth bag, offered to hold that as well. So she now had 4 bags. Feeling smug about her deeds, she looks at me and asked, "looks familiar?" She was trying to beat my record of carrying the most bags. Even though it was a gallant attempt, it still fell short of the grade and she would have to try another day.

Eventually  Perfume got a seat and retook her bag from Comp.  It was interesting to notice that she was still reading 'Unspeakable' but was now far advanced in the text and in the last few chapters. Comp saw her reading the book and started this snickering laugh for what reason I do not know.  After Row2 got out, I got a seat in her place and was seated next to the Kolij twin who was reviewing her homework. I was impressed how, these sisters never waste a spare moment without keeping abreast with their schoolwork, the same for sleepy head.

Comp soon reached her stop and exited, the others went straight to Bridgetown were we all disembarked, the old lady once again giving me thanks for giving her my seat. Of course, she was most welcomed.

Have a blessed day!! Bendiciones!!

March 28 2014 'BDD and Comp goes BSSAC'

Today, the stop was empty with hardly any persons there. I was sincerely hoping to see some of the regulars, as I had no direct change and the smallest note was a five dollar bill. The option crossed my mind of taking a minibus, but I resisted it for obvious reasons. Comp was not going to be out today, after getting her miracle ticket she was probably packing a picnic basket to head to the stadium, so I was all alone.  The only person at the stop was the busfare bully's victim. Seeing I needed change, I resolved to try a different approach from Comp and to use what I would call busfare pooling, instead of bullying. I asked her about the bus going up and told her that  I had no change and asked if I could pay for her. Being compliant, she readily handed me her fare. By the time the bus came, another person had come to the stop and I did the same again, so I paid the fares for all and kept  the change.

On the bus, R2 was in her seat and the intruder in the seat behind her, but no other known person was recognised. I sat in our regular seats in row 1 and said hello to R2 as I passed in. By the time we got to the corner NC had called to find out if the bus was on the way. By the time it reached her stop, the seat next to me was still vacant and she sat to complete our row. I gave her an update of the events of the prior days  until we reached the Cutter's stop and BDD got in.

BDD was not in her school uniform but was dressed in jeans and a tee shirt with her Springer tie around her neck, obviously going to BSSAC.  We asked if she was going to sports and if she was a competitor and she said no, her sport was volleyball, but was going to support her school. We  recommended to her that she should cheer for the correct school, that being Combermere, BDD looked at us as if we were lunatics from a mad asylum.  She said that was unthinkable, given that Springer was the champions for the last 11 years. We however reminder her that she was now surrounded by 3 Cawmerians and was outnumbered and it would be in her best interest to comply.  She noted however that 6 other Springer girls were scattered across the bus to come to her aid.  To avoid a outbreak of war, we conceded that she could cheer for Springer and that as a bonus we would also allow them to win the championship again this year. This would however be the last year  we would grant that privilege and from next year would be taking back our rightful due. BDD found this very amusing.

Later along, I noticed that she had a insulated cup in her hand and asked if she was drinking tea.  She said yes and I expressed shock that a teenager nowadays would be drinking tea and walking about with a mug. I was then educated about modern tea drinking. NC and BDD both explained that drinking designer coffees and tea was all the modern rage. NC related how all the youngsters at her workplace would be drinking, the coffees, cappuccinos and other modern brews and BDD said that she and her friends drank teas often each week. To prove it she pulled out her Italian Coffee House prepaid card and showed it to us. In unbelief, I asked if she would spend $8 to $10 dollars for a cup of tea and she said that with the  card she would be entitled to a 5% discount and also free coffee products on special occasions like birthdays. Trying to tease her, I said that the cup was probably empty or filled with water, and just  being carried to give an impression, but she assured us that it did indeed have tea and that on weekends she and her friends would meet in town at the tea house, to lime and sip a favourite brew.  This was quite interesting and an insight into the modern habits of today's youth.

After the education on coffees and teas, NC left at her stop. At the Boatyard, BDD left with her teacup and I continued to the terminal.

I now would also get a designer tea, a peppermintcino.

March 27 2014 'AC closes umbrella'

As I approached the stop today, it was overcast with heavy clouds. There was some rain earlier in   the  morning  and I  wondered, if given the warning that I would not be welcomed to share Comp's umbrella, if I should  not take my half-broken one. As I got to the stop, AC pulls up at the same time, and then Comp comes trotting down the sidewalk with her noisy shoes announcing her arrival. It was at this point that I noticed a beautiful rainbow arcing across the sky.

We waved at AC, and the others present and Comp then began to relate a long twisting story about her getting a ticket for BSSAC. The rain started to fall at this point and looking for shelter I noticed that AC had her umbrella open and so I moved towards her. As I got closer, she began to close the umbrella and in alarm I said 'Not you too!'. I expressed my surprised and disappointment that she would deny me the use of her umbrella and that I expected such behaviour from Comp but not her. She later apologised and explained that when she saw us moving, she assumed the bus was coming and was closing the umbrella in preparation for taking the bus. So she reopened the umbrella and we shared its cover, while the few drops fell.

Whilst under the umbrella, little Jillia and mother comes along and surprisingly, the little baby on seeing Comp, starts to wave and smile at her. Everyone is alarmed at the reaction of the baby to Comp including AC. As we began to board I tried to see if Jillia would give me a wave also, using my sweetest face and tenderest voice but without success. My charm obviously does not extend to babies.

On board, no R2 or Penny. The front row is empty on both sides  but R2L is out today.  So being ahead. I sat on the left in front of R2L, I pulled her bag to indicate I saw her and said "good to see you". Comp sits but does not notice R2L so intent on giving the final episode of her 'miracle ticket'. The story took forever to conclude, but had a happy ending so was worth the wait.

The bus was sparse and few of the regulars present, until the Hedding's corner when 'slim jeans (SJ)' got on board. She greeted Comp with a wave and a smile but surprisingly, I was not acknowledged at all. Comp observed it and postulated that it was because of the incident on Tuesday that caused this reaction.

Comp and I considered the matter for a while and then remembered the mint bag. Out came the grey (black) bag, and the distribution began, R2L was given hers and to which she commented "This is very late today", with me agreeing and  taking one. Comp was putting up the bag when I suggested that slim jeans should be offered one at this time also.  It was Comp's intention to do so at the point of her departure, but I felt it would look strange the do so, so long after the others. So she brought back out the bag, but then realised that all the mints were gone. She took a mini chocolate instead and passed it across the aisle to SJ. SJ gratefully accepted the gift and began to consume it immediately. I took the empty mint bag from Comp and calling out to SJ showed her the empty bag and remarked "we are all out of stock and need to get a refill". To which she replied "you definitely need to".

Given the opening in communication once more with SJ, the topic moved to school sports. I beckoned across the aisle and mouthed to her asking if she went to Combermere. When she finally understood, she said no, Springer, and that she would be supporting them today and tomorrow at the games. We then embarked on a session discussing the event and with me admonishing Comp when she attended, to look across the field at the coral stoned buildings on the Waterford corner to see which school she should support and give her loyalty. Being naturally contrary, she declined to do so!!

Comp soon left  and then AC and finally SJ. This time as she departed, I was given a wave and goodbye. The estrangement was apparently ended.

The last time the mint bag was empty we got a donation to replace it. The call is now out for another donation. Any kindhearted reader is invited to do so!!

March 26 2014 ' the bully pays back'

At the stop today, me and AC arrived together to meet Ms Shewsbury who was already there. As I crossed the road and gave salutations to all, AC asked if I was alone today and I said so far.  I discovered that the bus had already gone up to turn around and come back down, so I called Comp to let her know that the bus would be coming soon. Seconds  later, she turned the corner and joined the group.

Whilst waiting, a Well House bus came down and Ms Shrewsbury took that. Next followed a Silver Sands bus which was boarded by that crew. At that time it started to drizzle and I had to seek shelter. Noting that comp did not have her umbrella open, I went over to AC and stood under her umbrella  requesting a shelter from the rain. We both correctly observed that Comp was unwilling to open her umbrella because she did not want to get it wet. Thank God for a considerate friend in times of need!!

While waiting, AC started to count her fare and realized that she was 25 cents short. Quickly, Comp trying to redeem herself from the umbrella episode and get out of guilt from the many incidents of bullying AC for her bus fare in the past, offered to give her the missing coins. AC made it clear that she only needed 25 cents but Comp brought out a dollar coin and offered her. Being a fair and honest person, AC insisted on returning the correct change and so gave Comp the 75 cents she had. Unsuccessful at appeasing her conscience of her despicable acts by trying to buy AC with a silver dollar, she accepted the 3 coins and grudgingly put them in her purse. I fully agreed with AC, Comp should seek confession and repentance as absolution for her heavy heart, and not resort to bribery.

On the bus, my Bush Hall driver was on the route again and the  front seats in the appointed spot were free. Comrade R2 was in her accustomed seat and we took a seat in front of her in row 1. Looking around, R2L was absent and in her place was another known face,  a person who normally drove to work but was on the bus today. We greeted warmly as I showed surprise at seeing her.  I turned to R2,  gave her a welcome and asked if she had an opportunity to check any of the sites for the free kindle books. The welcome was returned but no opportunity had been taken to look at the free offers.

On turning the corner, Comp spotted the blue beacon of aquamarine in the distance. On nearing the stop we saw NC in a crowd of 5 waiting for the arrival of the bus. She boarded with some regulars like 'fat and jolly' and  other Sea Breeze workers. Comp and I speculated about the fact that she always boarded last in the crowd and today she did the same. On entering, she took a seat in the reserved row, directly in front of Comp. She wanted to be sure that no major dispute ensued today and that she would be on hand to mediate if Comp and I had one of our customary disagreements. The right side was now complete with the regular group, and the left side had 2 of the accustomed crowd.

The journey was rather tame, but 2 incidents stood out in my mind. One is the explanation for NC's entry into the bus in last position. When questioned by Comp she explained that it is because, when she arrives at the stop, she would board in the order of the people she found there. If she was the last to arrive she a would board last, also, she would give preference to the young, aged, pregnant etc.. This impressed me and I  attributed it the the influence of 'Waterford', Comp however disagreed, saying it could be the primary school or home influence, but I know differently.

And then as we got to Pilgrim Road an elderly man got in and stood in front of NC. Even though he was not infirmed or feeble, NC stood to offer him her seat, which he refused. This made me feel like a proud headteacher, who had instructed his wards and then later see them rise to success. To know that an ' unruly and undisciplined' bunch could be so transformed. Comp and NC performing benevolent and philanthropic acts spontaneously, really blessed my heart. She later took the heavy bags for a passenger (her friend) standing opposite her and held them until she left.

At R2's stop, for the first time she gave the group a farewell greeting. She wished all to "have a good day", to which I responded "same to you too !" and gave NC a thumbs up.

NC's progress did not however extend to the knowledge of spanish, she now professes to be an expert 'native google translate spanish speaker', and asked me 'Estoy un problema?', mispronouncing the last syllable of estoy. When Comp asked what she said and I repeated, Comp turned into 'Ms. Particular' once again.

Comp has this tendency of paying particular attention to the most irrelevant and inconsequential details. Making particular fuss to correct minute points. This occurred with NC's spanish. The discussion then continued across the aisle about the pronounciation of the word and possible meanings etc. Fearing that she would  metamorphize into a blood boiling, vengeance taker for a second day. I did not push the point.

NC left  at her stop and Comp at  hers. I continued to the terminal.

No ser un problema hoy en día, tener un día bendito!

Don't be a problem today, have a blessed day!!

March 25 2014 'disclosure'

Today, the realization came to mind that next week might be the last travelling with Comp on the SLC. This would make a definite change to the morning commute and hence I need to consider how to address this issue.

As we got on the bus, the same Bush Hall driver was on duty again today. I greeted and told him that he was working the route very often, to which he made a reply that I did not hear clearly. Row 1 was partially occupied on both sides and Row2 was in her place, R2L was absent. Comp decided to go further in the back of the bus to row 5 left, 2 behind the door, but I decided to stay up front in the "Promised Land". It is my belief that my territory is in the first rows (1 and 2 of both sides). This position give me a comfortable view of the journey and also the placement to assist anyone in need, such as the elderly, sick or pregnant ladies, who are ignored by the uncompassionate. Also the seat by row2 was vacant and I wanted to talk to her.

So whilst Comp went to the back, I asked for an excuse and took my seat. After enquiring about how was the weekend, I decided to bring R2 up to date on the whole bus character saga. I explained to her that she has been nicknamed by us as R2, because she sits in that position always and about my self and Comp. She learned about the derivation of the name Comp (companera) from the spanish for buddy and I being companero. I told her about NC (non-Companera), R2L , Rosemary or (AC, Alternative companera) and intruder. She seemed quite intrigued by the whole naming process and I further gave her our speculation on how she shifts position from row 2 to 1. She agreed with me that if row 2 was occupied she would move to row 1. She learned that in those cases, she would be called row2.1.

As we moved through the various districts, I pointed out to her the various characters as they came on board. She saw "sleepy head" and the Kolij twins. I showed her Julianna lookalike and the place where BDD gets on board. Next was 'spa girl and at the Heddings corner, "slim jeaned student". She  got a full rundown on the main characters and took it all in stride.  To change the tone,  I introduced some Cawmere comments and then I asked her about her kindle reading and offered her my top two sites for getting free kindle books. I noted them on a slip of paper and gave to her. I don't know if she would visit them, but next time I see her, I'll be sure to ask what she thought of them.  By the time she got to her stop, surprisingly she said, 'goodbye' and left.

By this time I had BBMed NC, to find out if she was off today since I didn't see her on the bus. I had to give my seating position and an update on the latest bus news. The conversation centered on Comp's pending absence and how that would change the chronicles and who would be my next travelling buddy.

(For Comp's eyes only)
He llegado a la conclusión y hemos acordado que no puede ser reemplazado. Como miembro fundador del equipo de autobús, usted es insustituible y todos los días va a ser considerado en alta estima.

From our conversation (NC and I) it was agreed that the chronicles will continue even if Comp is absent and the others will be incorporated into the crew. Next I heard the familiar outburst of laughter in the back of the bus and knew that had to be only one person. I sent her a text to let her know she was disturbing me to which she replied sorry.

After, R2  and Comp left, I conversed with NC until the terminal. We at least have a plan for next week.

March 24 2014 ‘the bellman'

The maternal instinct was stirred in Comp again today as little Jamilla and her mother came to the stop. Comp on seeing the pair arrive, shouts out the baby's name and as though familiar with the voice, she looks around and gives her little smile. At the stop, there also was Ms Shrewsbury and AC. The discussion was about there not being a 6.00 am bus and the possibility of having to take a minibus. A yellow minibus came, and I decided that I would not take it as I'll rather wait for the 6.30 SLC, Comp decided she would wait also. The bus came seconds later, and we happily took that instead.

While boarding the bus, AC points her fare at Comp asking her if she wants it, but Comp responds not today. I noticed that the fare included several small coins, five and one cents and  therefore concluded that the reason the fare was refused was because of the many coins. I was hoping that maybe Comp had been rehabilitated from her 'bus-fare bullying' and the refusal was a sign of this. I will have to monitor to see how long her changed behaviour lasts.

On the bus, the driver was a known Bush Hall resident, so I gave him a special greeting and then looking down the aisle, we saw comrade R2, in her usual seat, but no R2L or Penny. We took our regular seats and AC took the seat next to R2. The crew now had possession of our claimed territory, the first 2 rows, 'the promised land'. On sitting I looked back and said to AC, "now you know how to keep your bus fare", referring to having small coins to dissuade the bully's interest.

Outside the Crane Hotel, we saw a couple that we had not seen so far for the year. This rasta couple had been dubbed the lovebirds for the affection they would show to  each other at the bus stop. It was clear that the rastaman was clearly smitten with the long locked beauty who was his girlfriend. If he was not taking the bus, he would walk her to the stop and give an earsplitting smile as she boarded and left. If he was taking the bus with her, he would show his pride when sitting by her side or across the aisle watching her. It was good to see them after these many months and we believe if was a result of the missing 6 am bus, that there were seen today.

At the corner,  we saw no aquamarine, so we knew what that meant and we also saw none of the regular school friends. Today was however the day  that my training around hotels  came into use, as I took up duties as a bellman.

The first occasion was when a mother with her daughter entered the bus. The mother was holding two bags and a Business portfolio, as she was standing by the reserved seats with the poles, she was having difficulties holding the pole so I offered to take the portfolio. she handed it over and was able to get a better grip afterwards.

Later, Perfume got on with her customary oversized orange bag, I was willing to take that also, but she passed by and went further into the bus. Then a nurse came in wearing her colourful scrubs also with two bags. She was standing next to me and the large patent leather bag was so big, she was unsure where to put it. I beckoned to her to pass it and she placed it on my lap, on top of my laptop case. Then at Oistins Comp made me proud. A man with a withered hand and walking with a cane, got on board. He had gotten past the reserved seats without an offer of assistance, Comp called to him and offered him her seat. The man was visibly grateful for the gesture as he sat beside me. As a consequence however, Comp place her bags on the pile I was already holding, to complete the mountain of luggage. I was now sitting with five bags on me and barely able to see over the top at the way ahead. I tried to protest the addition of her bags, but it appears that everybody ignores my protest anyway, so my efforts were wasted. I was however happy that she stood for the gentleman and would like to think that something was finally rubbing off.

As the bus cleared, the mountain diminished, firstly, Comp's two bags, then the portfolio , then the nurse's oversized bag, I could now see ahead again.

It was a pleasure to be able to aid a traveller along the way. I surely know how it feels to struggle with a heavy or oversized bag on a crowded bus and I'm sure someday the favour would be returned.

March 21 2014 'No conscience!'

‎I just witnessed two women with infants sitting in the three sitter side seats on the bus‎. The women were big and there was not enough room for a third person unless they were small (boney) like me. Up comes a big lady and tries to fit into the small space. One of the mothers is already breastfeeding a baby and everyone is uncomfortable in the tight fit.

As a boy scout, I had to do my part. I called the third person and gave her my seat. The mothers were now comfortable for about 5 minutes , until another person came and squeezed themselves between them once again.

How do you win? Just gotta keep trying!!!

March 20 2014 - Row2 'Up and On!'

This was the day that we were able to strike up an interest and conversation with R2. It was another quiet day at the stop, with not many travellers on the road. On boarding the bus, we noticed that there were few passengers on board and that R2 was in her regular seat. So, today instead of sitting in row 1 with Comp, I moved over to row 2. Actually I did sit with Comp but looking back and seeing the vacant seat in row 2, decided to move over.

Before the move, Comp remarked to R2 that her friend,'the intruder' was absent today, to which the response was given, "it seems so". I then asked if I could sit in the seat for a minute and leaving my bag with Comp, moved back one space. I first said I had come to apologize, if by chance she had gotten the impression that I was bothering her by the offer of the mints the days before. She said "of course not", and a conversation developed.

At the Long Bay corner, no sign was seen of the familiar aquamarine, so it was assumed that NC would be absent once again. She had however played a trick on us and had changed colours to avoid early detection. Today she wore a white polo shirt and black pants. I took the colours as a sign of her contrition and forgave her, seeing she was wearing such somber colours. Comp made some remark about "which school we went too ?" (such impertinence!!), which made me ask R2 "did you go to Combermere too?"

CAUTION CAWMERE RANT AHEAD!!

I should have known that the answer to that question would have been yes. The quiet demeanour, and poise, the confidence and elegant behaviour and angelic smile all were tell-tale signs of being infused with the spirit and ethos of Waterford. I had noticed some unconscious connection from the first time she was observed on the bus, but until now was not sure what was the irresistible bond that knitted the common hearts together of all fellow Cawmerians. It now made sense, she was one of us.

END OF RANT!

After this confession, a discussion continued on all things Cawmerian. Of course, it would be out of place to disclose the contents of the conversation for uncircumcised ears, so please excuse the absence of a detailed report.

Comp was visibly uncomfortable in the presence  and surrounded by such an illustrious trio. But she can be comforted that she lived near to the school and was already blessed with the honour of having friends who attended there and being raised in such close proximity.

I asked for my offering from the bag. I turned over the mints and new additions to the bag to Comp last night, after her disparaging remarks about my forgetfulness. I knew that her hoarding tendencies were more suited to the task anyway, so I was not too perturbed by the comments. I got a mini snickers chocolate  and R2 when offered by Comp said she ate chocolates but did not want any. NC declined saying she did not like ginger.

The remainder of the ride went smoothly,  and when my new comrade left, I saluted her with a farewell "Up and On!".

We only saw  Penny  and  the Julianna lookalike of the regulars today, but I was satisfied that the trip was well spent, and besides it's Friday!

Gracias a Dios que es viernes! (Thank God it's Friday!!)

Bendiciones!!

March 20 2014 'the ginger effect'

Today Comp absolved herself of the responsibility of the custody of the mint bag. When I tried to hand over the donated mints to her safekeeping she flatly denied to accept them and tried to pass it off as an attempt to give me the opportunity to be the benefactor. Obviously, I was able to deduce the real reason was to escape being labeled Ms. Scrooge any longer.

As we boarded the bus, we saw that there was a row 2 convocation. Both row 2s were sitting on the same side, side by side and on the left. The seat in front was vacant so we sat in row 1 left. At the Long Bay corner, again no shining beacon. This is becoming a cause of concern. At least our newest comrade would let us know of the upcoming off days but Non-C is non- compliant and we have to guess about her absences. My suggestion is a 2 day mint penalty for the infraction.

Along the Long Bay road, Comp asks for her mint. I gave one to her and passes one back to R2L, knowing however that Row2 does not like mints I hesitated as I held one in the air and said "I'm sure my friend doesn't want one", without making an actual offer. She smiled that angelic smile and said "No, I don't like mints". At least she knew that the offer was not personal but a general daily happening.

One of the Kolij twins got on board but sleepy head was absent. At the stop we passed what looked like, relatives of sleepy head, a bigger sister or mother and possible brother.  Again today BDD was also not present.

At the Hedding's corner, slim jeaned student got on. By this time there were no seats left so she stood at the end of the reserved section beside Comp.  As normal she had her big bag and was handing it over for me to hold. This time I feigned resistance complaining that these bags are to heavy but ignoring me she places the bag on my lap. Comp joins in saying that I should be made to carry all the weight and adds her bag to the pile. This elicited smiles from all, as we enjoyed the playful banter.

Later along, we passed the St. Lawrence sisters waiting at the bus stop but as the bus was full it did not stop. It was good however to see little Jamilla back out to school.

When R2 got out at her stop, slim jeaned student took her seat. The posse was being rotated between the four front seats on the left, as she was now next to R2L. I took the opportunity this time to offer her a mint, but was careful to explain and give the following disclaimer.  The mints were ginger mints and were hot. If accepted expect a little sting as I was accepting no liability, it was to be taken at your own risk. She accepted the terms and took the mint but added that if they were too hot, I would have to take responsibility. Comp chimes in by making note that it was I who was offering the mint and she was not responsible in any way (talk of betrayal). As I inquired a little later if all was okay, she gave the confirmation that all was well, so I avoided that lawsuit.

At the Luigi's Stop, R2L got out, she informs us she would be off tomorrow and back out on Friday (hint, hint, NC!) and wishes all a good day.

Comp breaks down in a laughing fit at a discussion on massages and then leaves at her stop, (It it sometimes really embarrassing to witness her outbursts) and then the student taps me on the shoulder as she reaches her stop to say goodbye.

It was indeed a pleasant trip today!!

Blessings!!

March 17, 18, 19 2014 'quiet days'

Today's chronicle is to report that we have had quiet days so far this week. On mornings many of the regulars are absent and Comp has not been up to her usual antics, so there has been nothing exceptional to report.

Monday morning we met little Jamilla and her mother at the stop. The baby seems enthused with Comp and has been giving her some of the sweetest smiles. I sense that the long buried (or maybe now arisen) maternal instinct has been stirred, so please protect your infants when she is present.

The friendships being developed are however getting stronger. Rosemary (AC) is becoming a true friend and we have been having interactions outside of the bus encounters. Bdd has moved from being hostile to using respectful titles, such as Auntie and R2L is so comfortable with us that she now says which days are her off days and when we can expect to see her.

It is now confirmed, our preferred seating is now only a matter of luck and chance. The first row right is mostly taken by row2.1 and so like the regular passengers, we have to take a seat where one is available, mainly however in the first two or three rows. For the last two days we were fortunate to spot the aquamarine as we turn the Long Bay corner, Comp no longer mistakes it for the garbage cans and is correctly identifying NC. Also, since the black plastic bag has been depleted, we have not had the mint ritual for 2 days. Today, we were only able to retrieve the remnants , so that the last three were shared with the triumvirate.

The bus impact has also spilled off the bus. I have been telling the girls in my office of some of the occurrences on the bus and they seem truly impressed. One sees it as an example of practical Christianity and the other as a good way to make friends. Today, I was given a donation of mints by one of the girls to replenish the exhausted stock. This I will make sure to pass on to Ms. Scrooge for safekeeping and distribution.

Finally,  Monday, an idea came to mind, which is now being investigated and developed. This project would be of great benefit to commuters leaving from Well House and will be good exposure for the chuch in the community.  We're hoping it materialises and know it will be a tangible reminder of the influence of the bus chronicles.

¡Ricas bendiciones de Dios! ( God's richest blessing!)

March 14 2014 'comp's greeting and the referee'

Today, little baby Jillia was at the stop with her mom and brother. This time she was fast asleep and escaped the antics of a wannabe mother, Comp. Ms. QOTY was there and MyM but the other regulars were absent.

On entry, we saw the expected, Row2 was again in row 1 and the intruder in the row 2 spot. It is evident that this will be the new order, and hence to avoid confusion, when Row2 is in the first row, she will be designated Row2.1. Well, today Row2.1 greeted Comp with a hello and a smile for the first time ever. I received an upward glance, but no verbal greeting. R2L was absent and also P, so none of the other regulars were there. We sat in row 4, 2 rows behind the side door.

Along the route a few of the other known passengers got in, 2G2B2'S brother and fat and jolly. The Kolij twins got on at their stop but no sleepyhead. Julianna lookalike boarded and  then at the Cutter's stop, BDD got on. At first she was looking for a seat up front, but when she saw us in the back I beckoned to her to come and sit in the seat in front of us in row 3 by the door. Having run out of mints yesterday, I had two mini chocolates and I offered one to BDD, who was glad for the upgrade and smiled with a thank you. I was reserving the other mini chocolate for the slim jeaned student (SJS) but she was not out today.

I was later surprised when I was consulted to be a referee in a conversation that BDD was having with a school boy she was talking to. She looked back and asked if "Samsung wasn't the best?". I understood that they were talking about cell phones and were discussing the most popular brand. I answered that "my preference was really for iphones", and then hearing the talk of blackberries added that " I have a blackberry that runs on android, so its close to the samsung" . This supported BDD's argument, so it  strengthened her case. Having gained full fledged acceptance, I now am assured that we are no longer strangers. Comp emboldened by the interaction, leans forward and asks BDD her name and is given her christian name. It was a common and popular modern  girl's name. She later got off at Oistins to get the school bus.

The remainder of the trip was as usual uneventful, with Comp relating numerous stories. I have not spoken so much in the last 5 years. I will take the weekend to rest my jaws and vocal cords.

I am quite surprised with the experiences we've had this week on the bus. We're certainly much closer to the persons we've met than the same time last week and I believe everyone had been positively impacted. I just goes to show 'how a little, can be a lot'!

¡Tenga un buen fin de semana!

Have a good weekend!

March 13 2014 ' seating disorder'

Today, there was complete disorder in the seating arrangements on the bus. Before the bus came, a few of the regulars were there, MS, Comp and a new young woman with a toddler and a little boy. Everyone was taken with the cute features of the baby girl, who had two poofs like Mikey Mouse and a cute pink suit and socks. Comp started to wave at the baby and make all sorts of baby cooing sounds, which had me a little embarrassed and which surprisingly made the baby start to smile. I immediately started to wonder if the baby was smiling because she was in the comfort of her mother's arms or if she was laughing at comp. The baby's gaze seemed fixed on her and she would at times duck into her mother's bosom playfully hiding.

As the bus came we boarded with MS taking the lead and Comp and me following. At the farebox when MS paid her fare the paper roll broke and the driver had to stand to fix the machine. Comp at this time takes the opportunity to try to persuade the driver that as the machine was broken, we should not have to pay any fares. The driver however is not convinced by this argument and fixes the machine tape and shows how to remove the receipt without jamming the machine. Final attempts to convince the driver fail and Comp pays with the driver pulling a receipt for her.

First thing we noticed was the seating order disarray. As is the new norm, R2 is in row 1, but R2L is back out again. Comp decides to go to the back of the bus with MS and I follow. While passing I explain to R2L that we're sitting in the back today and looking a little surprised she nods. Comp sits in row 7, one ahead of MS and I decide to sit with P on the other side of the aisle. R2L visibly confused and looks back and mouths to Comp,"your sitting very far back, today".

P is also surprised, as she cannot understand why 1) We are so far back in the bus and 2) Why I'm not sitting with comp. She questions me as to why I'm sitting next to her and leaving Comp alone and suggests that I should move over to keep Comp's company. She was also listening to music and had taken off the headphones to speak to me. I assumed that she wanted to continue listening to her music undisturbed and so I moved over next to Comp. To be honest, she was looking a little dejected and miserable in the seat all alone, so I probably saved her from falling into a bout of depression.

At the corner, Comp saw the beacon of the east, miles away and said that NC/ ANC was taking the bus today. When she got in she was clearly confused  about where everybody was and sat next to R2L. On looking around and seeing us in the back, she said something to R2L and made her way to the back also. She took a seat behind me and next to MS.

When the black plastic bag was opened,  ANC  and I both got our mints. I asked for one for R2L , which I had to get up and deliver to the front of the bus and  I offered one to P who accepted. Comp took hers and proclaimed that the bag was getting low.

At the Cutter's stop, BDD got on board and was also a victim of the disarray, She looked around and not seeing the crew, took a seat in row 1 in front of R2L. It was amazing that in getting in and seeing the familiar R2L in the seat she waved and smiled warmly. Being informed that we were in the back, she afterwards looked back and gave us a smile and wave also.

At the Hedding's corner, we saw the student in the tight jeans get on board and take her seat in the reserved seats.  She too obviously missed the crew, but a little later hears the voices in the back and looks in our direction. On seeing the gang in the back she waves and says a hello to everyone.

It was indeed  a good feeling to know that all the regulars and members on the mint gang, were looking for us today, when we were not in our regular places. It was also heartening to know that on exiting they took time to say goodbye as they left.

When P left, she gave a wink, as she made her way to the door. When R2L left she gave a wave and a 'have a good day'. I replied with a 'same to you'. And as ANC was about to leave, I reminded her that BDD was still in the bus and that she should tell her goodbye. So, as NC stepped out the bus she waved to BDD from outside the bus. I couldn't see the response , but I'm sure that the gesture was returned. Comp then decides that BDD should not be deprived her mint and went back into the black bag to get one. As she was nearing her stop, she went to the door and handed one to BDD still sitting in her seat.

So today, even amidst the chaos, contact was still made with all. The only one excluded was  the tight jeaned student, who will have to get a double share on the next occasion.

Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.God saw that the light was good, Gen 1:3-4

In the same way, let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. Mat 5:16

Tener un buen día!

March 12 2014 ' the exchange bureau'

Today, there was a slight drizzle before the arrival of the bus. At the stop when I arrived was Comp, Ms. Shewsbury (MS), BFB's victim and several others. I approached and asked Ms. Shewsbury if she was okay and if she had any recent problems with the BFB. She said all was well, to which Comp gave a snide smile. Then to my surprise as the bus drew near, I saw she and the 'victim'  take their money and hand it to the young man standing at the stop. I remarked that the bus fare bullying was spreading, and MS suggested that from now on, she was asking for a commission,   but now, there was a significant difference.

These persons were willingly passing their money over, there was no terror and fear in their eyes and from their actions they seemed to have had prior knowledge of what to do. I suspected  that the man asked them beforehand to give him the fares, so he would pay for them, and they were willing to cooperate. My only wish is that my friend (Comp) was observing, noticing and taking notes, so that she would be able to amend her ways.

On board, the confusion again with the seats. Row2  was in row 1, who gave a good morning with her eyes and bright smile,  and  R2L was present in her place. P was also in her seat in the back. We sat in row 1L, in front of R2L whom we welcomed warmly.

The journey was uneventful and quiet, the only significant activity was my final failed attempt to give R2 a mint. As the black bag came out, I asked R2L if she wanted one and she accepted  and me and comp had ours. I asked R2 if she would accept one today and she politely declined, with that graceful smile again, saying that she doesn't eat mints. I finally accepted  my failure, and have resolved not to be a bother in the future.

The school girl  with  the incident of the old man and the bag got in, and a little later the Julianna lookalike and Perfume. At the Rock Hall stop at the end of the runway, a pregnant lady got on board. She stood in front of the reserved seats waiting for someone to give way, but no one moved. I was just about to offer mine, when a senior gentleman sitting there volunteered to stand up. This started a murmur in the bus, started by R2L. The reason, the pregnant woman was standing and waiting in front of the school girl who was sitting in the seat and refused to move. It appeared that the thought never crossed her mind that she should give way, and it was eventually after a little delay and no movement, that the senior stood. The young girl was decried as uncaring and her actions shameful. It certainly did not reflect well on her image and that of the school.

With that incident behind us we progressed gradually, talking from topic to topic until we all departed at our stops.
