Evening Edition February 28 2014 'the beggar'

Evening edition

The 5.00pm Bayfield bus started with drama. A Well House resident known for begging and being drunk, was refused entry by the bus driver because he did not have the correct fare.   He stepped on the bus but was asked to get back off because ;
1.) he presented an iD card with a black cloth over the face and
2.) he only had $1.

The bus driver was quick to spot the scam and refused him. I met this man once before at the Well House stop. One morning he came begging for money to get on the bus, when I told him I had no small change, but could pay for him out of a larger note when we got in, he changed his mind, saying he was not leaving right way, but wanted to travel later. He tried a few others at the stop and then left when no one gave him money.  This evening after being put out the bus, he reentered the terminal and started begging for one dollar. After being refused by a few, I told him I would pay the additional dollar when he paid his. We got on the bus, he paid his dollar and I added mine. The driver then remarked about the ID card and that the man had money in his pocket. He was known to the driver for his beer drinking and regular schemes. Even though I was skeptical, I had no issue with paying the fare for him. Give him cash , No! Helping him to get home , okay.

This was the evening of Agrofest and the celebrations for the 375 anniversary of parliament. Traffic was chaotic and on the road to the hospital, the driver turned off the engine on two occasions while waiting for the traffic to move. It took 20 minutes to traverse that short section of road.

While waiting in the stalled line, I remembered the call I got from comp about an hour earlier, saying she was put out a 'castle bus' because it was supposed to be going to Silver Sands.  That sounded familiar, a case of 'déjà vu' as I had a similar experience two days ago. Of course , I was laughed at, and of course, I got great delight that retribution had come so quickly. What a man sows, that shall he also reap. I'm still waiting to hear the rest of the story. The last info I got was a SMS saying ' more drama, just got switched to other bus, pray for me'.

Taking note of these myriad bus experiences can become a full time profession. Driving the car, was a tiring, frustrating experience compared to the never ending adventure you experience on these buses. I once felt proud to be a member of the National Geographic Society, and would display my certificate with pride. Little did I know, that I would be on an 'expedition', traveling the unchartered territories of the Bayfield and Sam Lord's wilderness and recording them in the Chronicles.

Until the next adventure!

February 28, 2014 'the seating order'

Today, the prodigal comp returned!!! She came at my home as the rain was falling and immediately told me to find my umbrella. Not even an offer of assistance to a poor, shelterless traveller. Obviously, she never heard the parable of the sheep and goats, about him that 'does kindness to the least of these my brethren'. After the rain came down harder and the broken umbrella I was forced to use, did not work, the weight of guilt on her conscience cause her to capitulate and offer me a 'corner shelter' during that 'torrential downpour' to the bus stop. ¡Gloria a Dios! At the stop I got my broken umbrella to work and was saved from drowning. By the way, on the way across, her mentor 'Gestapo', observed from out of the shadows and said something about "getting a brolley".

At the stop a more recent posee member, ms. Shewsbury, said that the bus had just gone up and would soon be down. Ms 'question of the year' was there, but no ideal restaurant, rosemary or marido y muyer. A bayfield bridgetown bus came down and surprisingly, a gentleman who normally takes the silver sands bus got in. We were initially wondering if he realised that he had taken the wrong bus (as a person did recently), but ms. Shewsbury surmised that he was not probably going to work, as he did not have his usual workbag. I complemented her on her keen observation. This just underscored that remarkable skill of bajans who are 'brilliant at observation' or are just like an unnamed prodigal friend I have, just 'malicious'.

As the bus was about to leave, rosemary came up in her husband's car. I told the driver that she was also taking the bus and he waited for her to enter (my scout's honor). She sat behind comp, in the seat with row 2.

It is amazing that a distinct pattern is followed by the commuters on the bus, and everyone takes their customary seat or place. Penny takes a seat 2 rows behind the bus door. Me and comp take the first seat on the driver's side, behind the reserved seats. Behind us would be row 2 and rosemary, and on the other side another lady to be called 'row 2 left', as she also always sits in that seat. In rosemary's absence, NC would normally sit in rosemary's place in the second row. In the reserved seats, sleepy head would sit in the last place just before the first row and BDD in the same row or on the other side of the aisle. For those standing, unspeakable (UPP) would stand in the aisle just before or after me and Julianna on the other side of the aisle normally backing UPP.

At long bay, the young rl got in, I pointed her out to comp as my bus companion for the past two days, but as the bus was getting full she had to go to the back of the bus. None of the other regulars were present today, sleepy head or kolij sisters or BDD, Julianna got on at foul bay but UPP was absent.

While on the bus I received an email with a youtube link from NC. I started a BB conversation with ENC and at certain points it was speculated whether comp was actually really expelled from the girl guides.

To my concern, Jamilla and her sisters were absent again and I wonder if she is indeed suffering from colour trauma. Maybe it was the agrofest today that kept the school children away, as many students were not seen on the bus.

The road was clear and traffic flowing freely so we made good time. It was another uneventful trip and on reaching town, I realised that the traffic restrictions were already in place. The challenges would begin when trying to get home. That would be another chronicle.

February 27, 2014, 'the sick commuter'

Today was a uneventful day and the morning trip, calm and pleasant. I must first recall that yesterday morning, whilst at the stop. I met an acquaintance who I know is suffering from a terminal disease, waiting for the bus. I was surprised to see her at the bus stop as she normally drives. We started a conversation and she was commenting on how beautiful the day was so far, with the cool breezes and the birds singing. It reminded her of what the garden of Eden was and what heaven would be like. We discussed how we must take these opportunities to give thanks and appreciate all that has been given to us. She explained that the reason she was not driving was because she was going to the dentist and felt it safer not to drive. When the Bridgetown bus came she took that, while I waited for the SLC.

But today, I was meet by Rosemary (AC) and a new wellhouse regular at the stop, no ideal restaurant. Rosemary asked for comp and I explained that she was travelling. It was a quiet trip, row 2 was back in the regular seat, a good omen and '2good to be 2's brother', got on board. No NC today, but the watchman embarked at Long Bay. No sleepy head or kolij sisters, surprisingly also, no Julianna or Perfume. I was wondering if it was a bank holiday and no one told me. Bus driver's daughter got on at Cutters and took the seat in front of me, today she was reading a book, it appeared to be a romance type novel.

For the last two days since comp's abscondment, a young and slim red leg, would occupy the seat that she would normally sit in. I'm confused about the contrast, young v 'old', slim v 'not so slim' or as NC said fat, red leg v 'pale unknown colour. I'm trying to figure it out and if anyone can help me, I would appreciate it.

I did however get to have an online conversation with a, to be left unnamed, off duty, non-applying Compañera throughout the duration of the trip. It was quite, pleasant as this person did not suffer from motion sickness, and showed a knowledge of colours. We chatted online until I reached Bridgetown.

Today, I meet on the bus and who also sat in front of me, a individual I had to take to the Ministry of Commerce's Public Counsel complaining about poor workmanship. Despite our previous interactions, he was quite pleasant and greeted me warmly, I of course have no animosity towards him and returned the warm greeting. I did miss however the Sis lawrence primary school sisters, expecially the little Jamilla. My information is that she is sick, and I wished her well. (Certain persons have a tendency of getting one sick, I hope this is not the case here).

Thank God it was a safe smooth trip, without incident. No wrong buses, no mistaken identity.

¡Bendiciones! (Blessings!)

February 26 2014 'sam lords or silver sands?'

This was quite a day of traveling, I had to take 3 buses today, each of which had their separate adventures.

Bus 1
6.30 Sam Lords

None of the regular friends today, row 2 girl moved to the other side and the others were no show. Bus driver's daughter got on at Cutters and Julianna and Unspeakable at Foul Bay. Of course, Unspeakable was standing next to my seat and I offered to hold her bag. I was sitting in at the window otherwise I would have stood up. The bus was crowded to capacity as normal, and at Durants the St Lawrence sisters got on minus little Jamilah. She must be sick, for she was absent for 2 days. At Oistin's the bus lightened and unspeakable got a seat. We both read for the remainder of the trip, I my news on the ipad, and unspeakable, her book, 'unspeakable'.

Bus 2
12.30 Sam Lords?

I left work early to go home to finish a project, I was glad to see a bus at the Sam Lords gate so I  rushed to board it. At this time of the day, the road was light and the bus relatively empty, about 10 passengers. At Oistins, the bus kept straight instead of making the turn up Thornbury Hill and I was saying to myself, maybe the road was blocked and the driver was making a detour. It was only when it passed the turn to Miami Beach that I realized something was wrong. I quickly checked my ticket and to my horror the route was #13. The wrong bus!! I quickly got out and walked back to Oistins. It was the Silver Sands bus !!

Bus 3
1.30 Sam Lord's

After the trauma of the last bus, I was glad when the next bus that came was clearly marked #12, Sam Lord's Castle. Certain I was now on the right bus, I paid my fare and took a seat. On the way to the seat, I saw sis Hunte from Golan and as I sat behind her, I tapped her on the shoulder and said Hi. She responded also, with a nod of the head.

When I sat, I noticed something strange,  Sis Hunte, looked slightly different in the profile. She wore a black beret, and had the same white hair, but the features were somehow different. IT WAS NOT SIS. HUNTE! The poor woman must have wondered who was the strange person that greeted her on the bus. She was however very gracious and made no fuss. Even as she left the bus in Foul Bus, she greeted me again as she exited.

IT WAS TRULY AN INTERESTING DAY OF TRAVEL!

February 25 2014 'the old man makes a call'

I  am glad I was a Scout and a Pathfinder in my youth .

Today, I met Comp and Alt. Comp.(Rosemary)  at the bus stop. Comp offered to pay my bus fare (probably feeling guilty for not offering me a shelter under the umbrella yesterday), we discussed an incident I had yesterday on the Bayfield 5.00 pm bus , where a sick lady was not offered a seat by 5 strong men sitting around her.

On board we saw Row 2 girl in her customary seat, and later at the Long Bay stop, NC got in. Knowing that despite the youthful appearance, she would be sore from stretching the day before, I performed my scout"s duty and offered her my seat. The first of three occasions on this trip. The posee was now seated in a group at the front, like it was a convention. First row, Comp and Non-Comp, second row, Alt. Comp and Row 2 girl. Later other regulars joined in at Long Bay, Queen college sleepy head, Kolij sisters and possible brother. At this point, an elderly man got on board and I stood for a elder, the second time for the morning. Fulfilling the scout pledge of "helping other people at all times".

The bus was filled rapidly and at the Cutter's stop, Bus driver,s daughter (BDD) got in. NC seemed a little concerned as this girl had promised to beat someone at school yesterday and she and NC had a situation the day before. At Foul Bay, Julianna and Perfume got in, the bus was now filled to capacity and both had to stand in the front area. By Gemswick, the bus was filled to capacity, so much so, that there was no room to move anywhere. By my count 12 were standing in front of the reserved seats alone.

I was a little annoyed at the practice of bus drivers allowing passengers into the bus, knowing that it to be  filled to capacity, and still no moving when the new passengers cannot go down.  This happened at the Rock Hall stop.  A red lady wanted to get into the bus, there was no room for her to move down and the driver sat without saying a word with the bus waiting. Eventually after complaining, a few people shifted and the red woman was able to step up and the bus continued.

This is where Comp and Non-Comp began there speculative murmuring. A school girl was standing at the end of the reserve seats by the first row, holding onto the barricade. When the crush started she shifted and put her bag on the barricade and sat on it. Apparently the bag slid down and was partly resting on the leg of the old man I stood up for. It then appeared that the bag was on the man's lap and she was sitting on the bag. The talk began that, the young girl was sitting on the old man, and that he was feeling happy. Another said that, the girl had no shame, putting her weight on the senior and so forth.... A little later on the trip the man got a call on his cell phone. NC said that he was calling to get a stretcher to meet him at his stop. I was noticed however, that the man had a cell phone a little newer than Comp's. he had a case and was able to use the phone adeptly. Maybe its time to upgrade our friend to a model like that.

At the Durants stop, the 3 St. Lawerence sisters did not get on board. Everyone realised the obvious reason. Comp's lessons in colours and shapes yesterday, has the little girl confused and the mother in her wisdow was trying to avoid a repeat on 2 consecutive days. The girl maybe went home talking about the 'yellow car being orange".
It was decided that NC would look for an appropriate  learning game for her tablet, and we would retire Comp for her teaching post.

Things were uneventful for the remainder of the journey. At Oistins,  the bus cleared and I think I now understand, why the drivers "pack them in", earlier on the route. He knows that the bus will clear further on, so he tries to accommodate as many as possible. The method of doing so however, leaves a lot to be desired.

On the way, we saw some of the multi-coloured "white" fowls, shown to the girl the day before.

At Hastings, when Comp. got out, I was able to offer perfume aka unspeakable my seat as divinely ordained and fulfil my pathfinder law "to be a servant of God and a friend to man".

We sat together until Bridgetown. No book reading was done that day.

I met all my pledges from my youth organisations. I got to work in peace.

Have an OXO day!!!!

February 21 2014 'the unspeakable'

As we got into Heddings, a pregnant lady got in and the driver insisted that she not sit in the front seats and that she take a window seat not the aisle. Comp  volunteered to give her seat, so I moved from the window and sat by the aisle.  La companera sat in the reserved seats in the middle. I tried to make some small talk about the driver really looking out for her, but she gave no response. At Foul Bay, Julianna and Perfume got in, Julianna was standing next to me and I offered to stand but she refused saying she was soon getting out by DHL she allowed me to hold the package she was carrying, as I heard her voice, it reminded me immediately of the the real Julianna at SRFL. Perfume was standing in front of Comp, at the Lenstec stop, when the bus cleared, Julianna got out and Perfume sat next to Comp, reading her customary, book. By this time  I had BBed NC, giving an update of events so far. The first speculation was that it was a different book, but on observation it was seen to be the same one ' Unspeakable' she had been reading for the last few weeks. I noticed that she was now at chapter 9.

NC on getting the update now understood the seating arrangements and commented how comp was sitting in the forbidden, next to the unspeakable which is unthinkable. I showed the comment to comp but she did not understand. It was only later on the trip when she saw the title to the book that the dots connected.

Comp sent a text to NC, using her "phone". It was amusing to see the chubby fingers trying to maneuver the small keypad and making the multiple taps to send a message.  This is the same phone that has the small edition printed hymnal on it. Such is the amusement that makes a dreary trip, bearable.

I arrived safely and in about 1 hour, a speedy trip for this time of day.

Wishing an OXO day to all!!

Blessings.

February 22 2014 'sleepy head reads french'

This morning I headed to the bus stop in the drizzling rain, a little late, Compañera (comp) was already at the stop and I don't remember being offered a shelter under the umbrella.

No Rosemary or Ideal Restaurant today.

A bus came with the sign Bridgetown, it was lucky that we asked if it was the Castle bus, for the driver said yes, normally the bus would say Sam Lords Castle not to confuse commuters.

Row 2 girl was already on the bus in the customary seat.
Non-companera (NC) got in the bus in Long Bay, but the seat next to Row 2 girl was taken, so she sat lower down in the bus.

Bus driver's daughter got in the bus at the Cutter's stop. Comp pointed her out to NC.

Plume's Perfume got in the bus in Foul Bay, but no Julianna was seen, Perfume came and stood at the seat behind me, if she had stopped before, I would have fulfilled my scout's honour.

St Lawrence 3 sisters got on at Pilgrim Road and so did the young woman and son.

Comp had her little friend with her today,  the youngest of the St. lawrence sisters, who sat on her lap. As normal, feeling she is an educator, she tries to teach the girl colours and objects. However, she only teaches the colour white, the poor girl is so confused, she is saying the 'yellow car is purple' .

Bus driver's daughter seems to be a warrior as she plans to beat someone when she gets to school.

Sleepy Head St Michael girl held out well, only had a quick nod coming down Durants. She was reviewing her french homework, seems to have french on monday mornings. The last time I asked her 'parle vous francois?' She did not understand. Either she is not very good at verbal french or my spoken french is horrible.

The man on the mini bus with the long wacker pole was on the bus. This time he had the pole shortened. He was not willing to make the same mistake again with people mistaking his wacker pole for a standing pole in the bus.

Perfume (unspeakable) continues to read her book, probably pass chapter 9 by now.

Another day on the castle bus!

Evening - February 19 2014 "the inquisitor"

Today, I took Castle Bus as the line was long and a 4.30 bus was at the gate. I was standing in the area by the reserved seats and a young primary school boy, was seated in front of me. An elderly man entered and a passenger asked the boy to stand, he protested vehemently and the senior indicated that he was not going to far and preferred to not to sit. Then an elderly lady got in somewhere in the Oistin's area, and asked the little boy to give her his seat. The second time around the boy seemed compelled to give up the seat and he stood for the woman, saying he was soon getting out at the top of Thornbury Hill. This lady was rather bold as she started up a conversation with the boy, asking him where he went to school etc..

Later, as I got a seat next to her at Gemswick, it was my turn. She took me off guard as she stared at what I was reading on my ipad, until I decided to close it. Then, she started to quizz me, what was my name? Where did I live? I told her Wellhouse and she asked me, if I was living there for a long time? She said she was from the Long Bay area and gave me a full description of the area.

I next received a call from a work colleague and on overhearing the conversation she asked what work I did? When I replied accountant, she asked if I knew some person by name. The name was not familiar to me and when I asked her where the person worked she could not say. I  noticed that other passengers in the bus were snickering as she was quizzing me, they seemed to know her and was accustomed to her antics. I'm sure they were amused that she had snared another victim. She soon got at in Long Bay and I was released from her interrogation.

The bus soon reached Well House and at last safely home!

February 17 2014 'the wacker pole'

The day started slowly, with the buses running very slowly. At 6.30 there were no buses to be seen, so we took the minibus, the old driver with the farebox. What was interesting was the man on the bus with a weed wacker. He was seated in the first row directly behind in driver. The wacker was on the ground with the motor on the floor and the shaft in the air, almost touching the top of the bus. He also had a plastic bag tied over the spinning head of the machine. Every one that got into the bus mistook the shaft of the wacker for a standing pole, and then had to struggle to keep their balance as the pole would move under their body weight. This happened to about 5 passengers, much to the amusement of the seated passengers , especially Comp.

The stretch along Top Rock was slow going, the reason was not realised until we reached Divi, where we saw the police carrying out vehicle checks for taxes and insurance.

Blessings!!

February 11 2014 ' finders keepers'

Today, we met the regulars at the Well House stop and let them know that the protestations made yesterday about the loud music on the van bore fruit. The driver desisted from playing music for the remainder of the journey. I asked ideal restaurant how the renovations to the restaurant were coming along and she said that there were delays and the opening was pushed back until next month.

Today was a new driver not seen before. He drove very erratically and passengers were sliding all over the seats at every corner and curve he maneuvered. At Foul Bay , Julianna got on the bus, my usual friend the plume's perfume was not here today, but was replaced by Julianna who stood beside me. A new face was a young kolij boy, who Comp assumed to be the brother of sleepy head because of the similar eyes. I myself never noticed the resemblance, nor did I remember ever seeing him before.

At the Cutter's stop, the bus driver's daughter (BDD) got on board. She seemed not in a hurry and took her time to walk to the bus who had just put off a passenger. The were no seats available so she had to stand. As usual instead of going to the back of the bus, she stood in the front by the seats for the elderly.

The nursery school lady and son, were back out, and as usual she made the usual stop and handed the boy to the nursery attendant who came to meet him at the stop. She got out at the Flash Inn bar stop. We believe she is a worker at Lenstec. Julianna got out at the Pilgrim Road stop. Maybe she works at the hardware across the street or at school in the area, there are no other offices I know of in that vicinity, where someone dressed in office wear would go.

At Oistins when the bus cleared, I noticed a ten dollars bill on the floor beside me. I immediately enquired of ms second row behind me who was standing there and she indicated so only remembered two school girls who had gotten off the bus. I then remembered that a man with dreadlocks and in jeans was standing beside me, at one point he went into his pocket for his phone and maybe it was then that the money fell out. I took the money and it was agreed that if we did not see him in the bus tomorrow, the money would be shared between me and companera. There was one condition, the money was to be spent on healthy snacks and not meat products such as necks, liver and gizzards, these were outside of the price range anyway. Comp decided that a tithe should be taken out and I demanded a finders fee, so her cut of the take would be $4.  I have yet to decide how my half will be used.

A senior lady in the company of a white woman and her son got in the bus at the stop at Hastings Rock. I was tempted to stand for her bus as comp was getting out at the next stop, I decided to wait. When comp got out, I moved around and she took my seat. It seems that she was connected to the white lady as I saw her take an ice box she was holding from her, but maybe she was  just being helpful, for when offered to take an empty seat, the  white woman said she was getting off shortly and remained standing. The old lady sat beside me until we reached the terminal.

February 10 2014 ' baby blues'

This morning is a unsual day. Firstly, I got up later than customarily
about 6.10 and had to rush to prepare to get the 6.30 bus.

Secondly, when I was searching for the umbrella, it was nowhere on sight. I

got to the stop however on time.

Thirdly, at the invitation of an unnamed compañera, I took a yellow van

instead of the divinely appointed castle bus.

The omen that followed should have told me that something was wrong.

I was wearing a baby blue shirt, which made me felt really uncomfortable

and conspicuous.

Then as I entered the van a few of the 6.30 bus posse got in as well,

rosemary, ideal restaurant and others, but as the driver attempted to play
some loud music, they got up and left, I was considering to do the same,
but decided to remain.  This was in contradiction of my ' vow' to avoid
these 'buses' in the morning.

I did notice a change from the last time I rode on them. There were now 2

poles for people to hold on to when standing.

When the journey started, I immediately repented my decision. The narrow

isle, smaller seats and having to find a handhold to stabilise yourself as
the bus traveled was not what I needed. I did notice however that several
posse members were also on this trip. They had betrayed the castle bus, the
Kolij sisters and miss fat and jolly.

Even though I had a seat,' in the front row obviously', the plume effect
shortly took place. Near the Gemswick stop, a. Madonna and child got on
board and as a scout, duty called. I took my standing seat until Hastings
when she got out.

 What did I learn?

4 things:

1. Keep your vows.

2. Beware of invitations from spanish speaking women. I should have
followed AC (alternate) and NC (non).
3. Take car wearing baby blue
4. Be true to the scout pledge.

Nevertheless, I will have an OXO day,  and wish you all the same!!!!

My next move, to search for a lamb or 2 doves to offer a sacrifice on the grounds of Cheapside market for forgiveness.

Nevertheless, i intend to have an OXO day, I wish you the same!
¡ Dios te bendiga!

Non - Companera Speaks

This morning I had the Awesome and Honourable priviledge of sitting in the
most sought after, deeply desired, extremely esteemed, continually coveted
(you get the picture) seat on the 6:30 am 'Castle bus'. I must admit that I
can now identify & understand why that is the case. Firstly, the seat it is
VERY comfortable (in terms of location and space). Secondly the view is
GREAT (you get to see all those boarding the bus along with the bonus
panoramic views through the front and side windows). Thirdly the company is
Charming, Endearing, handsome(use of the common 'h' here is deliberate) and
Enchanting (he emits some kind of invisable perfume-like venom). Fourthly,
the conversation is quite Educational, Enlightening, Thought Provoking &
Abstractly Amusing (yuh betta whatch out fuh dem dry humour 'yorkers' dat
gine come hurling at yuh)!

Much of the 'usual commuters' (particularly those on the 'list of lists')
were a.w.o.l, inclusive of a certain unnamed companera (who I understand
had more 'fruitful' matters to attend to). Well I do hope she can 'mustor'
the courage to show her face on that bus & in that seat again. It is
proving to be quite habitual for her to either leave her companero
destitute or to inconsiderately encourage him along on one of her 'van
fantasy escapades!' (I shrugg)

That said! I truly enjoyed the journey from a companera's 'sit point.' It
was especially enjoyable to watch the 'plume perfume's no 1 groupie, board
the already very full bus far away from her usual port of embarkation, &
thus unable to get near enough to the plume to perform her unethical
exploitation! (S-HAKING M-Y H-EAD)

Being the whimsical wildflower that I am however, I don't think that I can ever settle for such a monotonous, rigid, rushed (what I usually hv to do to get that bus), 'riot riddled' (the constant ensuing battle for the plume) and even wrongly accessed (most of them probably think by now that the plume is some sort of village ram) routine. I therefore solidify my decision to be the greatest Non companera there ever was! I'll be honoured to fill in when necessary but only when and if it suits me!
